The animals and houses are all jumbled up in one picture! Count carefully: one-to-one, which has more? If 2 animals share each house, how many have no home — and how many houses are empty?
Animals and houses all jumbled up! The "one-to-one" stage compares quantities by matching: one animal per house shows at a glance which is more, and by how much. "Two animals per house" is the prelude to division with remainders: how many are left homeless? How many houses stay empty? All common picture questions in Primary One interviews.
Teach your child to draw matching lines or circle pairs with a pen (or finger) — "one animal to one house", not guessing by eye. When answering "how many more", count out loud: "1, 2, 3 — 3 more." Clear steps, no confusion.
Pair up socks, line shoes up in pairs, "two people per chair — how many chairs for 6 people?" — matching ideas can be practised anywhere at home, no special materials needed.
