Learning Focus

Left and right seem simple, yet they are a classic stumbling block in Primary One interviews and assessments. The key skill is perspective-taking: a person with their back to us shares our left and right, while a person facing us is mirrored. The second sublevel goes further — children must imagine themselves inside the picture and mentally rotate with the character. This "mental rotation" is the heart of spatial imagination and the foundation for directions, coordinates and geometry later on.

Playing Together

Learn with the body first: play "copy me" face to face — you raise your left hand and your child raises the hand on the same side; they will discover for themselves that someone facing you is mirrored. When an answer is wrong, don't rush to correct it — ask your child to stand up, face the same way as the character, and turn slowly. A small sticker on the back of the right hand works wonders as a marker until it is no longer needed.

Everyday Practice

Direction practice is everywhere: "look left, look right" before crossing the road; "put the cars in the box on the left" at tidy-up time; turning to commands during dance or PE. Even while cooking: "face the fridge — what would you see if you turned left?" A few direction prompts a day and left/right becomes second nature.
