The magic mirror transforms every number that passes through! Look at the example: 5 goes in and 9 comes out — the mirror ADDS 4! Find the rule, then work out what the other numbers become!
"Number transforms" are a first taste of function thinking: children must infer a rule from an example (5 becomes 9 — the mirror adds 4), then apply that rule to new numbers (3 becomes 7). This "induce, then deduce" reasoning appears in Primary One pattern questions and lays the groundwork for algebra later on, while drilling addition and subtraction within 10, 20, and 100 — with the final sublevel reinforcing the tens place.
Encourage your child to say the rule out loud before answering — being able to say "the mirror adds 4" shows real understanding. If the rule isn't obvious, compare the two numbers in the example: "how much bigger is 9 than 5? Count the difference on your fingers or a number line." When an answer is wrong, ask your child to re-check the example instead of giving the answer — finding their own mistake leaves the deepest impression.
Play the "magic machine" at home: secretly choose a rule (e.g. add 3), have your child call out a number, and you answer with the transformed number; after two or three rounds, your child guesses the rule. Then swap roles and let your child set the rule to test you — keeping it sensible and accurate is harder than it looks! No props needed, so it works on the bus or in a queue.
