Recognising Hong Kong coins and notes, paying, and making change are classic Primary One interview scenarios. At Mr. Bear's shop, children pick the right coins to pay and work out the change — putting arithmetic straight into real shopping, and seeding financial awareness: money is finite, and buying means comparing and choosing. Sublevel 7 goes further with money word problems: "Which toy can you buy two of with $15?" and "A watermelon costs $11 and the total came to $20 — what was the other fruit?" Children learn to extract the maths from a story and decide whether to add, double, or subtract — the core skill behind Primary One word problems. Sublevel 8 raises the bar with cart puzzles: "Two cups of soda cost $10; one soda plus a packet of fries costs $8 — how much are the fries?" Children must first halve to find the single price, then subtract to find the other item — two reasoning steps in one question, and the earliest form of algebraic thinking.
Ask while playing: "Paying $10 for a $6 item — how much change?" and "Is there another way to pay?" ($7 can be $5+$2, or $2+$2+$2+$1.) Same amount, different combinations — excellent number decomposition practice in itself.
Real supermarkets work best: let your child hand over the coins, then check the change together. Tip the piggy bank out regularly to sort and count — a free, real-world maths lesson.
