Learning Focus

Chain addition and subtraction extend basic facts within 20: 3 + 5 + 8 isn't one leap, but two steps from left to right — first 3 + 5 = 8, then 8 + 8 = 16. Holding that intermediate answer trains working memory and order of operations, a must-have Primary One skill. The three terms are colour-coded blue, orange and green, and after each answer the calculation is revealed step by step so children can see every move clearly.

Playing Together

Encourage your child to say the middle step out loud: "3 plus 5 is 8, then 8 plus 8 is 16." Verbalising beats silent guessing. When they slip, find together which step went wrong — was it the first step, or did they forget the third number?

Everyday Practice

Pose questions in daily life: "We bought 4 oranges, 3 apples and 5 bananas — how many fruits in total?" "18 cookies, you eat 3 and I eat 5 — how many are left?" Real-life three-number problems beat worksheets.
